An art day on Djurgården

Djurgården is one of Stockholm's best-loved places, and for art lovers there is more to discover than many people think. Three art museums are within walking distance, surrounded by parks and water.

Morning: Liljevalchs

Start near Djurgårdsbron at Liljevalchs konsthall, Stockholm's oldest art hall. It shows temporary exhibitions, and in spring the popular Spring Salon, where both unknown and established artists exhibit.

Lunch and a walk

Walk east along the water. There are several cafés and restaurants on the island, and the waterside paths are lovely all year round.

Afternoon: Waldemarsudde

Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde was the home and studio of the painter prince. Today it is a museum with his own art, his collection of Nordic painting and temporary exhibitions. The gardens and the view over the harbour entrance are an experience in themselves.

Late afternoon: Thielska Galleriet

At the far end of Djurgården, near Blockhusudden, Thielska Galleriet occupies banker Ernest Thiel's former villa. Its collection of art from around 1900 is known, among other things, for its works by Edvard Munch.

Getting there

Tram and bus run to Djurgården from the city centre, and ferries operate in the warmer months. Check SL's journey planner for the best route, and see which exhibitions are on via Stockholm Art Scene before you go.
