Free art in Stockholm – how to see a lot without paying

You can see a surprising amount of art in Stockholm without paying anything. Several of the largest museums offer free admission to their collections, and the city's galleries almost never charge an entrance fee.

Museum collections

Moderna Museet on Skeppsholmen offers free admission to its collection, with classics from twentieth-century modernism through to contemporary art. Nationalmuseum by Blasieholmen also has free admission to its collection of painting, sculpture and design. Temporary exhibitions often have an admission fee, so check the museum's own website to see what is included.

Galleries

Commercial galleries are practically always free to visit. Many are clustered in Östermalm, Vasastan and Södermalm, which makes it easy to walk between several in one afternoon. You don't need to be a buyer to step inside – galleries are meant to be visited. Keep in mind that many are closed on Mondays and have shorter opening hours than museums.

Art in the metro

For the price of a regular SL ticket you get access to what is often called the world's longest art exhibition. Most stations in the Stockholm metro feature artwork, and some, such as Kungsträdgården, T-Centralen and Stadion, are artworks in their own right.

Public art

Sculptures and public works can be found all over the city – in parks, squares and new neighbourhoods. A good idea is to combine a walk on Skeppsholmen or Djurgården with a museum visit.
