How to do a gallery walk in Stockholm

Stockholm's galleries are one of the best ways to see what is happening in art right now. They often show living artists, exhibitions change every few weeks, and it costs nothing to walk in.

Where are the galleries?

Most established galleries are in Östermalm and Vasastan, with more small and artist-run spaces on Södermalm and in the suburbs. By choosing one area you can easily see three to five exhibitions in a couple of hours.

Don't be shy

Many people hesitate to step into a gallery. There's no need. Staff are used to visitors who just want to look, and it's perfectly fine to walk around, read the exhibition text and move on. Feel free to ask about the artist – most are happy to tell you more.

When to go

Galleries are often open Tuesday to Friday afternoons and a few hours on Saturdays and Sundays. Openings, the first evening of a new exhibition, are usually open to everyone and a great way to experience the atmosphere.

Art halls

Between galleries and museums are the konsthallar (art halls), such as Bonniers Konsthall, Tensta konsthall and Färgfabriken. They show temporary exhibitions without a permanent collection and are worth including in your plans.
