Ruby Nilsson: RECANTATION

Ruby Nilsson’s RECANTATION centers on a new video work presented within a ritualistic exhibition environment. Its dark economic science fiction imagines an uncomfortable future of transsexual labor while questioning expectations that trans artists produce autobiographical work from an unimpeachable moral position. Moving from stage performance toward the dramaturgy of the exhibition space, Nilsson explores spatial, visual, textual and temporal possibilities. References to medieval witch trials, religious symbolism, mystical confessional literature and language used in trans and looksmaxxing communities shape the work’s dystopian world.
